Iontophoresis Treatment: Alternative Cure for Excessive Sweating
Iontophoresis treatment is a widely accepted treatment for Hyperhidrosis, specifically sweaty palms, sweaty armpits and sweaty feet.
Iontophoresis treatment devices are made in a variety of configurations and sold under a variety of brand names such as Drionic©, IONTO©, Maimco©, Encore© and many others. While they all are unique in their own way, how they are designed and how they operate, they all work under the same basic principle.
So what is Iontophoresis treatment?
Wikipedia defines Iontophoresis treatment in the following:
“Iontophoresis is a non-invasive method of propelling high concentrations of a charged substance, normally medication or bioactive agents, transdermally by repulsive electromotive force using a small electrical charge applied to an iontophoretic chamber containing a similarly charged active agent and its vehicle. To clarify, one or two chambers are filled with a solution containing an active ingredient and its solvent, termed the vehicle. The positively charged chamber, termed the anode will repel a positively charged chemical, while the negatively charged chamber, termed the cathode, will repel a negatively charged chemical into the skin. Iontophoresis is well classified for use in transdermal drug delivery. Unlike transdermal patches, this method relies on active transportation within an electric field. In the presence of an electric field electromigration and electroosmosis are the dominant forces in mass transport. These movements are measured in units of chemical flux, commonly μmol/cm2h.”
Huh?
Let’s try something a little more basic…
Iontophoresis is basically a process whereby you apply a positive electrical charge to a container filled with ordinary tap water and applying a negative electrical charge to a second container similarly filled similarly. There is no connection between the containers other than you; by placing one hand (or foot) in the container, you complete the circuit enabling the electrical charge to pass through you.
Wow, that’s basic. Even though this sounds scary, the medical community has proven that Iontophoresis is one of the safest and least invasive treatments for Palmer Hydrohidrosis (sweaty palms), Axillary Hyperhidrosis (sweaty armpits) or Plantar Hyperhidrosis (sweaty feet). It also has virtually no side effects which also sets it apart from many other treatment options.

Iontophoresis uses water to conduct a mild electrical current through the skin’s surface. It’s not entirely understood how or why Iontophoresis works, bu
t it’s believed that the electric current and mineral particles in the water work together to microscopically thicken the outer layer of the skin, which blocks the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface. Once this sweat output is blocked or interrupted, sweat production on the palms and soles is, often suddenly and dramatically, and I would say magically “turned off”.
During Iontophoresis, patients sit with hands or feet, or both, immersed in shallow trays filled with water for a short period of time (20 to 40 minutes) while the device sends a mild electrical current through the water. The process is repeated every other day for five to ten days or until sweating is reduced to a comfortable level. Once the desired dryness has been achieved, patients are switched to a maintenance schedule, ranging from once per week to once every four weeks, depending on the individual. To maintain dryness, Iontophoresis must be repeated as soon as sweating begins to return.
The only real drawback of Iontophoresis is the initial investment – the devices are expensive! Even the least expensive setup can cost $500 or more! And often, this is not covered by insurance!
Why so much? If you look at the basics of an Iontophoresis machine, you have four components:
- A power source
- Wires
- Water containers
- Water
This is the core of every Iontophoresis setup.
So why are these machines so expensive? Simple – supply and demand. While only about 3% of the population suffer from sweaty hands and the social embarrassment of wet handshakes, they pay whatever it takes to cure it. And those that produce these machines cannot lower their costs by selling in volume.
But there is an inexpensive option! To my surprise it is really easy to construct one if you have the right instructions to follow and it works like a charm!
